Gas and air, nitrous oxide, is a common and widely used form of pain relief in the birth room. However research show that nitrous oxide makes us far more open to suggestion. Why does this matter? Because we may end up agreeing to interventions and procedures that we may not otherwise have consented to without deeper questioning or further information.  Understanding what suggestion is, the power of it and how it can be presented may be helpful to both the mother who is making those choices. It can also be useful for the healthcare provider. Becoming more conscious about their language and the power it holds could be a key to more positive experiences. 📝☝️I've written a blog on this so as a mother you can learn to recognise suggestion, and be prepared,  or as a practitioner you can learn a little about language and suggestion - link in bio.

Hypnosis and mindfulness for birth should not be prescriptive in any way. When people say I want to be calm and quiet the question I want to ask is “why?”. Hypnosis is always about stripping off the stories which make us want to behave a certain way. It should be about uncovering our deepest power, our fearlessness, our strength. You will not know how that part of you chooses to express itself until you are there. You may be quiet and calm, but if your power wants to express itself why silence it? Hypnobirthing should about agency, resilience, discovery, power, confidence, choice. It’s about taking ownership of your choices, the space you birth in, and the expression of birth. Mindful Hypnobirthing is about giving you the knowledge and tools to do that, no passive scripts, but simple effective practical tools and an entirely different philosophy to other hypnobirthing you may have come across. As a doula and hypnotherapist of 14 years I know that hypnosis for birth is completely different to my general hypnosis - it’s not about deciding what your perfect birth would be and imagining it, learning a ton of techniques, it’s about being secure in the knowledge that you have everything you need within you to dive into this experience, however it unfolds - wholeheartedly and be ready to meet it fearlessly.

Doesn't it often feel that the emotions and feelings that carry life are like waves? They rise and fall - sometimes a gentle lull, sometimes a crescendo, moving through carrying us along with the current. We are a part of the ocean, an interconnected whole.  During birth those contractions are like waves, softer, stronger, perhaps softer again. They will rise within you, pass through you, they are you. Every contraction, every movement your body is making part of an ocean within...carrying your baby to you. They roll in and roll out. They are strong, because you are powerful, but just like everything else they are temporary. Do not fear yourself.  Learn to see the ocean, to surf the wave, stand before the ocean and throw your arms out wide, welcome all that it brings you.

Monday's are sometimes slow to get off the ground but notice THIS day right now, this moment right HERE. If it starts slow allow it to start slow. Notice the detail, the berries left where leaves have fallen, the sparkle of frost, the air on your skin. Go for a walk if you can. Take a moment to breathe, whether you are driving, on a train, with noisy children Notice this moment of day, just take one deep breath and notice where you are.

I've been very quiet on here as I've been hibernating in Wales (still am). Bliss. Mental health is really important and when I am working on intense projects that I give a lot of myself to, like writing a book, I need to intersperse the formal process with moments to reconnect with my inner psyche. Creative language emerges from landscape and from feeling spaciousness internally and externally. The mind settles as obstructive inner chat fades away consumed by the trees, grass, sunlight and water. Nature is a powerful tonic, especially when it's as beautiful as this and the company is as good.
